Date: 29 – September – 2019
Social media companies will have to provide the information of individuals who are suspects of serious criminal offenses including pedophilia and terrorism to help in the investigations.
A new treaty between the US and the UK that will be signed next month will force social media platforms based on the US this includes some giants as WhatsApp and Facebook to share their users’ encrypted messages with the British Police.
As part of this deal, the information obtained from British Companies will not be used in death penalty cases in the US, also both governments agreed to not investigate each other’s citizens, but we must remember that this is one of the objectives of the Five Eyes Alliance.
U.K.’s Home Secretary, Priti Patel, has previously criticized Facebook for its plan of enabling users to send end to end encrypted messages and requested “back doors” on social media for the intelligence agencies.
Across the Atlantic, the U.S. Attorney General William Barr has made a similar request and argued that technology companies and citizens should accept the “back doors” for the use of government agencies in order to prosecute criminals.
