Google completes takeover of DeepMind Health
Date: 19 – September – 2019
Google has completed the takeover of DeepMind Health division, yesterday in a blog post, Dr Dominic King, UK site lead at Google Health confirmed the transfer, also the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Royal Free NHS Trust, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust put out statements confirming that they have moved their contractual arrangements to Google.
Some personnel moves have been delayed because the National Health Service (NHS) trust is considering to shift their contractors involved in the DeepMind project to Google.
This move its controversial because in 2015 the UK’s data protection watchdog found out that the Royal Free shared the medical records of 1.6M patients with DeepMind without any legal basis, despite this DeepMind continued inking NHS contracts claiming at the time that the patient data would never be handed to Google.
Google takeover of DeepMind Health was announced a year ago, now all the NHS trusts that decided to keep their contracts signed initially with DeepMind will benefit from Google’s experience and scale to increase the speed of their research and deliver breakthroughs faster, accelerating the scientific progress.
