Facebook will launch new Portal displays in Europe

Facebook announced that will launch the second generation of their video-calling smart displays, this time in Europe, they will come in three versions:

  • New Portal 10 in display and 720p
  • Portal Mini  8 in display and 720p
  • Portal TV 

The new Portal and Portal Mini are similar to digital photo frames, you will be able to display your calendar, photos, play videos, stream Amazon Prime Video or Spotify, use Alexa (voice assistant) and also you can make video calls to other Portal devices, Messenger or WhatsApp.  

You can trigger the Alexa voice assistant with the phrase “Hey Portal” it will handle the device settings such as the volume and calls, each device has a wide-angle smart camera, smart audio, and the device will frame you during the video call even if you move around the room panning and zooming as necessary to fit you and any other participants in the shot.

In the case of Messenger calls it will be also possible to ad augmented reality effects.

Portal and Portal Mini have a physical cover for the camera and also the ability to disable the camera and microphones electrically, they feature 2.1 sound, with stereo speakers into the sides of the frame and a bass speaker in the back.

POrta TV 1

Portal TV is a box with a camera, microphones and a speaker you can place it under or next to your TV and connects to it via HDMI, wit Portal TV you will be able to play videos from Facebook Watch while on a video call.

The smart camera and audio features of the device use a local AI and not Facebook’s servers.
